Skin Resurfacing Q & A

What is skin resurfacing?

Skin resurfacing is a nonsurgical procedure that can enhance the condition of your skin. It's successful in treating skin conditions such as:

  • Sun spots
  • Age spots
  • Dark spots
  • Fine lines
  • Wrinkles
  • Acne scars
  • Rosacea
  • Melasma

Dr. Sherman offers a variety of skin resurfacing methods, including chemical peels and laser skin resurfacing technology, like the Icon by Cynosure laser.

How does laser skin rejuvenation work?

During a skin rejuvenation procedure, the laser penetrates your skin and sends energy through areas such as age spots and scars. This energy breaks up the pigment in these areas and reduces their appearance on your skin. The laser treatments also stimulate collagen production, which makes your skin look years younger.

Dr. Sherman may recommend 2-3 treatments for optimal results.

What can I expect during a laser skin resurfacing treatment?

Dr. Sherman evaluates the condition of your skin and reviews your medical history to ensure you are a good candidate for laser resurfacing treatments. He creates a customized plan for treatment based on your skin type and desired results.

Most treatments last between 30 minutes and two hours, depending on the size of the treatment area. During the procedure, Dr. Sherman applies a local anesthetic to prevent discomfort and provides protective glasses to keep your eyes safe from the laser lights.

Using a handheld device, Dr. Sherman touches the targeted areas of your skin. You may feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against your skin.

What can I expect after a laser skin resurfacing treatment?

Following treatment, Dr. Sherman applies a topical cream to protect the treated areas. He may also use clean gauze to keep the cream in place.

As you heal, your skin may appear red and start to peel. New skin continues to grow and may appear pink. It can take several months for the new skin to lighten to its natural color.

Is there downtime with laser resurfacing treatments?

It depends. The more aggressive the treatment, the longer the downtime:

PICO Genesis

With PICO Genesis treatments, you may experience redness of the face that typically resolves itself by the next morning.

ThreeForMe

ThreeForMe treatments can take five years off your appearance but may cost you 2-3 days of “social” downtime due to redness and swelling.

Fractional ablative laser treatments

The most aggressive procedure, fractional ablative laser treatments, can help you look up to 10 years younger, but you may require a week of downtime.

Dr. Sherman can help you decide which treatment method suits you best. Schedule a consultation online or by phone to learn more about the benefits of laser skin resurfacing at New Skin Medical.
