Scar Removal Q & A
What causes scars?
When you suffer an injury to your skin, your natural healing process kicks in, and new skin tissue and collagen begin to grow. If too much or too little collagen forms, it disrupts the skin growth and creates a scar.
What is laser scar removal?
Scars can make anyone feel less than perfect. Dr. Sherman uses the innovative Icon™ by Cynosure laser technology to improve the appearance of most scars. Unfortunately, scars cannot be totally erased, but with laser treatment and other methods, Dr. Sherman can improve the way scars appear and feel. These treatments can also work for striae, or “stretch marks.”
Icon uses fractional laser light to break down scar tissue and trigger your body’s natural healing response. The system helps to increase the production of collagen and new skin cells, which naturally reduces the appearance of scars from injuries, surgery, or acne.
What can I expect during an Icon laser treatment?
The Icon laser system is a noninvasive procedure that doesn’t require anesthesia. Dr. Sherman applies a cooling cream to your skin to ensure you are comfortable during the procedure, then he uses a handheld device to remove the outer layer of your skin.
Treatments often take less than 30 minutes, depending on the size of the treatment area. Following your treatment, you should be able to go back to your usual activities without any recovery time.
What can I expect after a laser scar removal treatment?
You may notice results following your first treatment. Initially, there may be swelling in the treatment area that resolves on its own. Other common side effects of the Icon laser system include:
- Increased skin sensitivity
- Mild burning sensation
- Skin flaking
Dr. Sherman recommends a quality moisturizer to help your skin heal. You should also avoid direct sun exposure or use sunscreen to protect your skin following a treatment.
Over time, your skin continues to produce new collagen and skin cells, which reduces the appearance of your scar. It may take 2-3 months to see optimal results.
Dr. Sherman may recommend additional treatments to achieve your desired results. He evaluates your skin type and the characteristics of the scar to determine how many treatments you need. Dr. Sherman spaces additional treatments 2-4 weeks apart based on your customized treatment plan.
