How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

If you are tired of dealing with shaving and waxing to get rid of body hair, it’s time to consider laser hair removal. Laser hair removal with the Cynosure® Icon™ Aesthetic System can help you achieve smooth, hair-free skin just in time for summer.

Phases of Hair Growth

To understand how laser hair removal works, it is essential to understand how hair grows in the first place. Hair follicles go through several phases in the hair growth cycle:

  1. Anagen Phase: Also called the growth phase, this is when hair is actively growing.
  2. Catagen Phase: Also called the transitional phase, this is when the hair follicle shrinks and the hair stops growing.
  3. Telogen Phase: Also called the resting or shedding phase, this is when the hair sheds and the hair follicle prepares to reenter the anagen (growth) phase.

The length of a hair follicle’s growth cycle can vary based on many factors, such as gender, age, ethnicity, and location of the hair on the body. Additionally, every individual strand of hair on the human body is at its own stage of development. This means that at any given moment, three hairs side by side on a person’s body could be in separate phases of the growth cycle.

The Technology Behind Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal uses laser beams to destroy hair follicles in the anagen phase (active growth phase). The pigment in the strands of hair absorbs the light beams, and the absorbed energy destroys the hair follicles. Because the hair follicles are destroyed while in the growth phase, this stops the cycle from continuing and prevents regrowth. (The affected hair follicles will not be able to grow hair again.)

In the hair growth cycle, hairs that are not in the growth phase are either in the transitional phase or the shedding phase. The hair follicles in these phases cannot be destroyed with laser hair removal. Therefore, laser hair removal may need to be performed over multiple treatment sessions in order to allow time for all the hairs in the treatment area to transition through the hair growth cycle into the growth phase, so that they can be destroyed. These treatment sessions are usually spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart, since the catagen and telogen phases can last for up to a few months.

Because the technology targets pigment in the hair, this treatment is most effective for patients with dark hair and light skin. Patients with dark skin and naturally white, gray, or red hair may not experience the same results as patients with light skin and dark hair. Nonetheless, the Icon™ Aesthetic System is more powerful than other leading brands and can effectively remove hair on individuals of most skin and hair types.

Results with Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal can eventually destroy all hair follicles in the treatment area, leaving you with smooth and hair-free skin. Treatment is safe for most body parts and is especially popular for the legs, arms, face, chest, back, and underarms. Getting laser hair removal is a terrific way to cut back on grooming time and achieve permanently smooth, touchable skin.
